Western Union is a service that allows for money transfers, currently operating in more than 200 countries, making it one of the most popular ways of transferring funds from one location to the other. The company has one of the most recognizable business names, and it’s understandable, given the fact that Western Union has nearly 150 years of history. In its early days it used to be a part of the telegraph industry, slowly becoming the first major communications firm in the United States.
Western Union offers several variations on the money transfer services, including business payments, person-to-person transfers, and online payments.
To send money, users can visit the closest Western Union branch, and send cash to any other office in the world. The transfer fees depend on the receiver’s location a well as on the senders one, and on the type of transfer. The receiver of the money must give away a Money Transfer Control Number, which is a 10 digit code that the sender him/herself produces, in order to confirm the transaction.
Money can be also sent online via a credit or debit cards. However, the receiver must accept the money in a Western Union office.
It is important to note that many scammers and defrauders use Western Union because of its anonymity. The company advises users to always make sure they know to whom exactly they are sending the money to.
