Brexit 50p coins to flood the UK
The British Chancellor is about to flood the UK market with millions of 50p coins commemorating the UK leaving the EU on October 31st, as are the current plans of the government.
Chancellor Sajid Javid has inquired whether it would be possible to mint the coins in time for Brexit.
The former Chancellor Philip Hammond, who served with Theresa May, proposed a more expensive collectors version of a Brexit coin, but Mr Javid insists on mass circulation, obviously taking on the view that Brexit is for everyone and not for a selected few.
Government officials, quoted by the BBC, commented that the decision to mint the coins, even before it is absolutely clear whether the UK will be leaving or not, is a statement of intent that the Treasury is dedicated the idea of departing the EU no matter what.
Back in October Hammond proposed the idea of minting some 10 000 coins to be sold to collectors for 10 GBP each.
However, when it become clear that Theresa May will seek to delay Brexit, the plans for minting the coin was abandoned.
The new coins will be inscribed with the words “peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations” and with a new departure date – October 31st.
The UK minted a 50p coin, when the country joined the European Economic Community back in 1973 and once more in 1998, when it held the EU presidency.
